Changes to my album cover

I needed to change the album cover colour scheme as the font originally was too dark.. I also needed to make the image of the band slightly darker so that you were able to distinguish the bands faces. Although it is a slight change it is going to make a big difference for my final maagzine.

Feedback from peers about my draft magazine

I took to facebook and got some feedback about my draft maagzine and how I could improve it. I wanted to get other points of view from peers so that I could chnage anything which didn't appeal to people.

After looking at the feedback I feel that I have enough knowledge on what I need to do to improve my magazine.

Creating a puff for my front cover

I want to add a puff so that it will draw the reader into wanting to read the magazine. From feedback from my peers about what content I should use in my magazine, some of them said they would like to find a competition that they could enter in the magazine. So I am going to make a puff based around that. I used fireworks to create this puff:

First of all I created a star to use for my puff outline

This is what it looked like, I liked the red font as it stood out which would draw the reader in.

I then added black lines around the edge of the star to enhance it on the page

Second Photoshoot

I decided to do a second photo shoot as I felt like some pictures didn't seem very professional. I am not very keen on the background of these images so I will edit it out. Also the lighting in my last photo-shoot seemed to dark which made the quality of the pictures look bad. These pictures were also taken at several different locations just so I could get a variation which would inspire me when creating my magazine

I like this image as the long shot shows what the model is wearing. However looking back at the image now I feel like the picture looks too posed

I really like these pictures of my model laughing as it seems a lot less serious than in my last photoshoot

I really wanted an image of my model sat down so that I could get a high angle shot. However looking closely at the image there is unnecessary litter and mud which I should of thought about before capturing the picture.

Double page spread interview

Here I am sat with Ava-Rose the lead singer of the band The Corrections where we are going to be discussing their success in the past year.

Hiya Ava so tell me, how did you all come up with the band name?

Well it seems quite cliché but all of us in the band have been through a bad point in our lives so by creating the band we had made a 'correction' to our life which put us back on track. I guess the name was influenced from our crazy teenage years which inspired us to form a band.

Have the three of you in the band always been friends?

Yes! We have all known each other from a very young age so it is very easy to know how to annoy one another. It's great though that we have been on this journey together and all stuck as a band.

It's amazing how far you have all come, is it still surreal to you?

Honestly none of us can quite get our head round the fact that 2 years ago we were finishing college whilst doing the occasional gig and now we are touring the UK. We love every second of our career and we still can't believe that people want to come and watch us perform. It's definitely been a very surreal experience which none of us would change for the world. But what people forget is we are just 3 musicians from East London who got lucky.

Okay so in three years time who would you like to be as big as?

If I could be as big as anyone, I would definitely have to say Oasis. They are THE coolest band and definitely know how to rock the stage, I just love watching their old sets when they performed at festivals, it really gives me a buzz.

Well, what festivals have The Corrections got planned for this summer?

This year we are performing at Reading festival which is so exciting as when we were teenagers we used to always go. So to actually perform at an event which we went to as teenagers is surreal and an amazing experience. We are also performing on the main stage at Glastonbury which honestly we can't get our heads around. We see it as the pinnacle of UK festivals so to actually perform there will be incredible!

Now lets talk about your new album release, Lifeline. It must feel amazing that the album has reached number 1 after only a week

It's so exciting isn't it? When we found out we were on the tour bus and our band manager told us, so we just cranked up the radio and partied till early hours. Let's just say it was a very messy night but was truly one of the greatest moments of the bands history.

Even Coldplay have said they are addicted to your album! It must feel amazing that the band is such a huge success in the music industry

Yes! Wow, when someone told us that we were in such shock! We honestly questioned whether they meant us. Seriously though to be recognised by other well known bands is a great feeling. Very exhilarating, we even heard they have bought tickets for our tour

Speaking of the tour, give us a clue and tell the fans who is going to be supporting you guys?

Well well well, lets just put it this way it's an upcoming artist who is going to take the music industry by storm. But that's all I'm giving away.

Finally Ava if you could perform with anyone dead or alive who would it be?

Personally I would love to perform with Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys, he is so talented and very easy on the eye! But I think Elvis is also amazing he just knew how to get the crowd going which for us is very important!

I am also going to add some songs which the band has been listening to in a separate box.

Questions for my magazine

Here are questions which I am going to include for my double page spread, I wanted the interview to be focused on the album cover which I created. The questions also focus on the bands success so readers would be able to understand the emotion of the band.

How did you come up with the band name?
It's amazing how far you have come, is it still surreal to you?
In three years time who would you like to be as big as?
Give us a clue, who is going to be supporting you on tour?
How does it feel that the album has reached number 1 after only a week?
Even Coldplay have said that they are addicted to your album! It must feel amazing that you are such a huge success in the music industry
Now tell us if you could perform with anyone dead or alive who would it be?

Editing pictures for my music magazine

I am now at the stage where I have started editing my images for my music magazine.

I used this eraser tool to crop the background of the image so that I could just have an image of my model

Here is the picture before I erased the background and afterwards:

As I have now got just the image of my model I can now start to use her on my magazine. I think as she has got her hand out I would like her to be leaning on some text, just so it doesn't look strange.

Although I didn't use this image in my final magazine, it was good experience to understand how to edit pictures on photoshop

Creating an album cover

To make my music magazine seem more professional, I have decided to create an album cover which I will use in my magazine to promote the artists who I'm including.

Below is one of the pictures which I took on my photoshoot which I'm going to use for my album cover

I imported the image to Adobe photoshop where I began editing, I changed the brightness and saturation of the image to make the background seem a lot darker than it originally was. I also really like the fact that both of the models pale skin contrasts with the background image of the trees.

I then added the album name Lifeline in the font 'Segoe Print' and the band name 'the corrections' in the font 'Copperplate gothic bold'. Both of these fonts give a very alternative feel.

I am then inserted my bands logo to have the finished product

I am pleased with how this album cover has turned out as I have used two colours which would really engage an audience. I can now start editing pictures for my magazine.

Updated Plan

This is an updated plan of action as the one I have done previous doesn't have realistic timings.

Creating the band logo

I have now decided that I would like to replicate the yin and yang symbol but changing the colours. I edited the image of the symbol on Adobe Photoshop, below is the symbol which I created. I like the idea of using the yin and yang symbol to represent my band as it normally symbolises peace and harmony but the two colours contrast with this where it creates a more alternative feel due to there being bright colours.

Producing my masthead

Here is how I made my masthead for my magazine:

I searched for my masthead font on the website www.dafont.com

I used the font 'Major label' I feel like this font matches the genre of my magazine whilst also being easy to read. Here is the orginal font before I edited it:

I then used Adobe Photoshop to edit the image. First I used the magic wand tool to eliminate all of the white background from the writing so that it was only the text you could see

This is where the magic wand tool highlights all of the background which is not needed, so that you can delete it and you will just be left with the writing.

Once I had done this I zoomed in on the 'A' so that I could fill it in red. I wanted to do this to my masthead to make it stand out when it was on my masthead.

This is my finished masthead which I created, I really like the fact that I contrasted the red and black colours as it made the masthead a lot bolder

Colour scheme's for my magazine

Now I have decided on the music genre for my magazine I need to think about the colour scheme. This is very important as it will intrigue the audience into wanting to read the magazine. However I need to think carefully about the colour scheme so that its suitable for both a male and female audience.

I really like the colours grey, white and red for my magazine as it suits an alternative genre. The red and white fonts really compliment the grey background, with the red font highlighitng the important articles which are included in the magazine. The central image is also in black and white which really accentuates the text on the page.

Here is another front cover of a popular music magazine which has a similar colour scheme. The red font is used as the masthead aswell as the main headline, personally I dont like that the two most important conventions on a front cover are both the same colour as it seems bland. However the white font does break it up but because the central image includes a lot of white, the font can occasioanlly look lost.

Here is another magazine which is more focused on the pop genre, I think the idea of the masthead is really intriguing which could suit my alternative music magazine I like the idea of two of the letters being filled in different colours, after doing some more research this is a trademark of the magazine as on every front cover two of the letters are filled in. This makes the magazine very specific and it would be easy for a reader to differentiate that magazine from another one. This could be a good device which I could use for my magazine as it is very specific

After some research I have decided that I would like my music magazine to have a colour scheme of red, white and grey. I think this really compliments the alternative genre which I will be channelling throughout the process. Below is a mood board of some images which I have found inspiring whilst deciding on the colour scheme.

Template ideas for my magazines

Here is a template of a front cover which I created. Here I am focusing on the layout of the page so that it attratcs the reader.

I would like the masthead to be in the centre of the page so that it automatically catches the readers attention. I think using a short quote from my interview could be a great device to use so that the reader can get an insight into what is being spoken about in the interview. The idea of having several images at the side of the page will show what else is going to be included in the magazine. I also would like to include a pug on my front cover to allow the reader to take part in something. I would like to include an image of the bands album cover, but I am uncertain where I should locate it on the page so that it doesn't look out of place.

Below is an image of a contents page template which I have drawn

You can see that I am sticking with the theme so that the text is on the left hand side making it flow easily. I will make sure the font is simple so that the readers can understand it all. I would like to include a picture of the main model next to the text and then add secondary images of the whole band together to show the promotion of the album.

Here is the double page spread template:

I am going to have the band name in the on the left of the page acting as the masthead, I will then have a quote from the interview underneath it. I will have the left hand page where the interview will take place and an image of the album. On the right hand page I am going to have some more text from the interview with some more secondary images. I would like the page to also be signed from Ava so that it seems more personal.

Pitch

I was asked to create a pitch as if I was presenting my magazine to a company, so that they got an understanding of what I was going to include in my magazine. It gives a quick overview of the kind of things to expect once I have completed my finished product.

Here is a preso of my pitch which I created on reelapp.com

Final decision on names for music magazine

I have sent out a survey to 5 people to find out which name they prefer for my magazine. I have made sure that they are in the age range of 17-18 year olds so that I can get feedback from my target audience. I have also made sure that I have given people background information on my magazine and the type of genre I would like to make it.

Here are the results on people's preferred magazine name:

As you can see from these results both 'Buzz' and 'Gracioso' have only received 20% of the votes whereas 'Amplify' is the most popular with 60%  Overall I think that I prefer the name 'Amplify' as it is related to music, the word amplify is used to make music loud. This represents my magazine as I want it to be big and loud so that people are attracted to it. I feel that this name will attract both a male and female audience so the magazine can suit anyone.

Photoshoot

Here are a few pictures of my first photoshoot where I got three of my friends Laura Cooke, Tyler Felton and Mitchell Fassett to model for me. I chose the location of a wood so it gave an alternative feel.

I feel that I should have used the flash on my camera when taking this picture as it is very dark which may not look professional on my magazine

I like this image however I feel that the lighting lets the shot down

Here are a few others in a second location with my cover model Laura, I got her to change her outfits so that it would make the pictures in the magazine look more interesting

I have decided that Laura will be my main model who will feature as the central image on my front cover. I will then decide which other model will be used for my band which I will create.
